Perfect Poetry

Award winning Liverpool poet, Eleanor Rees, performed some of her work today at the Mystery Literary festival. A collection of poetry from her book ‘Blood Child’ and some newer pieces were well received by the audience. The pieces were haunting and mysterious, filled with vivid imagery and read with delicate expression.

I asked Eleanor afterwards if she had any tips for new poets and how to get their work published. Her recommendations include: to attend readings of poetry and have a go at performing yourself. If you are looking at getting a poetry pamphlet published try to get some of your poems published first in magazines, even local papers are a start! Read poetry magazines such as ‘The Poetry Review’. Explore the poetry/writing scene too, to find out: what appeals to the audience and discover who your potential readership is.

Much thanks to Eleanor for her spellbinding performance today at the Mystery Liverpool Festival. It was inspiring for me as a female Liverpudlian writer and very motivational to see how much you can achieve if you put your mind to it. Tomorrow at the festival, there are poetry workshops and Liverpool poets discussing their favourite poetry.
